Experimental investigation on the abrasive wear performance and corrosion behavior of hybrid aluminium metal matrix composites (HAMMCs) reinforced with different weight fractions of silicon carbide (SiC) and boron carbide (B4C) (2.5, 5 and 7.5%) with a constant weight fraction of 2% graphite (Gr) is carried out. HAMMCs were fabricated through cost effective stir casting technique and the specimens are tested as per ASTM standards. Pin-on-Disc (PoD) apparatus is utilized for evaluating the abrasive wear performance, whereas electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used for performing corrosion studies on the cast composites. Wear loss and coefficient of friction (CoF) are determined from wear analysis. Corrosion current (Icorr), corrosion potential (Ecorr) and corrosion rates are measured from Tafel plot drawn between over potential and logarithmic current density. Corrosion resistance decreases with an increase in the reinforcement of B4Cs, due to the galvanic couples form between the Al matrix and B4C particles. Pitting corrosion is identified as the corrosion mechanism.
