The majority of adults worldwide have been infected with the Epstein-Barr virus. It’s asymptomatic in healthy people and is governed by a healthy immune response, but it causes life-threatening diseases in immunocompromised people, such as hemodialysis patients because the virus has the capacity to undergo latent and reactivation of infection in the host.
The present study design to investigate the relationship between Epstein - Barr virus and hemodialysis patients in Al-Najaf governorate. 15th April till 15th August obtained randomly from 118 hemodialysis cases involved 66 male and 52 female their ages ranged between 23 and 63 years was performed at Al-Sader Teaching Hospitals in the province of Al-Najaf from 15th April till 15th August 2020. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and polymerase chain reaction were used to investigate anti-EBV IgM and IgG antibodies and viral DNA.
The results of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay demonstrated that was IgM 41.4% including 43.1% in males and 38.4% in females While in case of IgG, the result showed that IgG positivity 57.6% including 59.1% in males and 51.9% in femals. Regarding PCR technique, the study showed that among 118 patients gave (44.9% PCR positive result including 54.1% in males and 51.9 % in females; in contrast; the results of control group were 12%, 10% and 6.6% for anti-EBV IgM and IgG antibodies and PCR technique results respectively.
A significantly higher prevalence of EBV antibodies was observed in hemodialysis patients of allage-groups compared with controls. Suggest that hemodialysis patients are at high risk for EBV infections. The older age group is also the most susceptible to viral infections.
