The article presents the results of an experimental study of the possibility of using the near infrared (NIR) band range to create a technique for visualizing optical inhomogeneities in the structure of soft biological tissues. Based on the literature data, a phantom was made that simulates the optical characteristics of biological tissues, containing local optical inhomogeneities, simulated by absorbing rods. Using the manufactured phantom, the wavelength dependence of the contrast ratio of the images of a pair of rods with a diameter of 1 mm from an absorbing substance, located in the phantom at a depth of 3 mm, was experimentally investigated. The study was carried out at four wavelengths: 808, 840, 904 and 980 nm. An infrared band video camera recorded the radiation passing through the phantom. The experiment showed the possibility of visualizing optical inhomogeneities in the structure of soft tissues in the NIR band range. The highest value of the contrast ratio was found at a wavelength of 904 nm.
