Considering the importance of critical thinking development and the research scarcity of students’ understanding of mathematics education in the broader context of higher thinking skills, we have conducted a research to examine how students learn derivative. The basic of derivative mastery is very important in life applications, to avoid any mistake in decision making. Analysis of students’ understanding in this research is based on Bloom Taxonomy Level. Using level instrument of Lower Order Thinking Skill (LOTS) or Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) regarding the derivation of irrational functions, it can be known strategically the students’ ability to understand derivative. The analysis resulted from 22 high school students shown none of students’ understanding had reached the HOTS level. The research result can be used to formulate a sequential technique for the learning process to obtain students’ understanding up to the HOTS level.
