The paper presents a method of image recognition, described in terms of a grammar that allows determining whether the representation of the image through its non-derivative elements and their relations is syntactically correct and, therefore, whether it belongs to the images specified by the corresponding grammar. The ngeneral theory allowing solving a number of recognition problems is offered. The approaches for determining the type of attribute and whether they allow statistical, fuzzy or structural processing are described. It is shown that using statistical methods, it is possible to identify bad symbols, select and arrange the symbols according to some criterion of utility or combine the symbols and form a smaller set of the best signs, but it is impossible to find new, good symbols.
