This review paper includes the study of semiconductor metal oxide-based ethanol gas sensor using ZnO as a sensing material. It gives the information about sensing of ethanol gas using single phased, metal-doped and composite ZnO nanostructures. Different performance parameters viz. response, limit detection of gas (ppm), the response time (Tres)/recovery time (Trec), and operating temperature are studied. From the study, it is concluded that there is an unbalanced tradeoff between the performance parameters of the sensors, i.e. (i) the sensor has a high response value for the high concentration of ethanol gas at high temperature (ii) if the sensor is operating at low temperature, then its response is also low (iii) if the sensor is able to detect a low concentration of ethanol gas, then its response is also low with high temperature.
