Alzheimer is one of degenerative disease that slowly destroys memory and cognitive ability. Currently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique combined with contrast agent is widely used to detect this disease at early stage because MRI offer better safety for patient with zero long term risk. To obtain accurate result, it is favorable that contrast agent has ability to accumulate effectively in the brain tissue that has been affected by Alzheimer. One of strategy to increase their target ability is by adding β-amyloid protein binding ligand in the surface of contrast agent because brain tissue has β-amyloid protein that can be used as targeting site in Alzheimer site. In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles were prepared by sol gel method, and coated with chitosan that already modified with Dimethylaminobenzyl to increase their attachment to β-amyloid protein. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) image confirm that iron oxide nanoparticles with particle size 12 ± 4 nm were formed. TEM image also revealed that the particle was surrounded by corona with thickness around 6 nm, which is most likely correlated with end-to-end distance of chitosan.
