Acupuncture as a traditional Chinese medicine has been used for thousands of years to treat diseases. Acupuncture is one of the effective forms of stimulation of the central nervous system. Acupuncture plays an important role in the functional reorganization and compensation of the brain. Different factors and conditions can cause various compensatory changes in the structural function and morphology of neurons or synapses, which are called neuronal plasticity. This process includes changes in morphology, structure, electrophysiology, and biochemistry. This article reviews the effects of acupuncture on the plasticity of neurons.
