In present study, conventional plasma nitriding process is used for the treatment of 16MnCr5 an low carbon alloy steel. Glow discharge obtained at an applied voltage of 450-650 volts with 4-7 A current at 400,450,500 for 4 hours in 20N:80H and 80N:20H gas mixture. Surface roughness of treated and untreated sample is compared which reveals roughness increased with increase in temperature and nitrogen content. EDS measurement from SEM images of the cross sectioned of DCPN sample after etching with 2% nital solution is performed, shows process of nitride formation is high at higher nitrogen ratio in gas mixture i.e. (80N:20H). Emission spectra by spectrograph in the wavelength range between 350 to 364 nm recorded by Optical emission spectroscopy.
