Thermal insulation coatings are applied to the heat transfer areas of structures exposed to intensive ambient heating to ensure the operability of the structures. If the heat transfer rate is non-uniform, the effectiveness of thermal insulation can be enhanced by using an anisotropic material that has a higher conductivity in the longitudinal direction parallel to the heat transfer surface compared to the conductivity in the direction of the normal to it. We present a mathematical model of the transient heating of a layer of such a coating. A quantitative analysis of the model allows estimating the influence of the anisotropy ratio on the leveling of temperature in the longitudinal direction and evaluating the possibility of reducing the ratio for the area where the heat transfer is maximum.
