We report on the scientific activity in the field of physics in the Balkan countries on the basis of the publications registered in the databases of Web of Science for a period of over twenty years. Judging from the number of publications the most active fields are: Miscellaneous Physics, Applied Physics and Condensed Matter Physics. Data are provided for the number of publications, average citations, h-index and the most cited papers from each country. The largest numbers of publications come from the three most populous countries, Turkey, Romania and Greece. Most countries show relative decrease in the number of published papers during the last five-year interval (2011-2015), while the most perceptible growth is demonstrated with articles authored by physicists from Turkey. Significant trend of increased cooperation among authors from Balkan countries is clearly evident by their joint publications. In addition a comparison is made with the published research originating from the Balkans in the fields of Mathematics and Chemistry. At present the physics papers from the area represent about 3.7% of the world publications in physics.
