Natural and anthropogenic atmospheric aerosols affect significantly the air quality, climate and human health. Therefore, the aerosols and their properties, sources and transport have been intensively investigated in recent decades. In this paper, we present and discuss results from the remote sensing of near-surface atmospheric aerosol layers over the city of Sofia and surrounding areas by means of scanning elastic-scattering lidars for monitoring air pollutants. The results obtained demonstrate that the aerosol lidar mapping could be regarded as an effective approach for accurate and reliable determination of the local sources, density, spatial distribution, and temporal dynamics of near-surface aerosols, covering broad urban areas.
