Surface plasmons propagate with losses due to internal absorption of energy in the metal. Here we investigate an infinite metal cylindrical waveguide embedded in dielectric medium. If the dielectric is replaced with an active gain medium it is possible to achieve full compensation of the internal losses. We investigated the complex dielectric function of the gain medium required for full compensation of different plasmonic modes as well as the influence of the waveguide size and type of metal used. The obtained total compensation curves allow us to find the minimum required gain of the active medium for lossless plasmon propagation.
