Montmorillonite (MMT) was modified by a cationic exchange method using epoxidized fatty hydrazides (EFHs) synthesized directly from epoxidized palm oil to produce an organoclay (EFHMMT). The basal spacing of the EFHMMT was characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) while the functional groups identification of the modified clay was studied using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that the basal spacing of the modified clay increased from 1.23 to 1.49 nm. In addition, the FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of the EFHs in the clay layers as shown by the existence of the EFH peaks in the organoclay spectra.
