The article deals with the casting process of the pistons for combustion engines. The molds are cooled to reduce the casting cycle time. The mold and cores are made of steel and cooled down by water. The complicated geometry of the casting tools and non-uniform cooling cause the inhomogeneous temperature distribution especially in the core. As a result, the internal stresses are generated in the core that cause it to crack and thus reduce its life cycle.
