A mathematical model with variable compliance which describes the volume of two-compartment respiratory system for pressure preset ventilation has been proposed. The model was used to study the outcome variables of clinical interest; tidal volume, end-expiratory pressure, mean alveolar pressure, and power. Furthermore, the limiting value for each outcome variable as the frequency of the breathing cycle increases was derived.
