EMAT is a new and effective transducer to generate surface waves without using a couplant. As a result, the inspection performance is more repeatable and reliable than piezoelectric based ultrasonic testing techniques. In this paper, we introduced the benefits of using EMAT for surface inspection, configurations of EMAT transducers, EMAT equipment and test setup configurations for surface inspection. Sample results of EMAT surface inspection are also presented with successful applications in the field. Finally, we present some recent study of quantitative study results of defect characteristics on surface wave reflection and transmission coefficient. This information will be useful toward future quantitative surface defect depth sizing.
