In this paper we discuss two effects which can influence the performance of a plasma beat‐wave accelerator; multiple Coulomb scattering from the plasma particles, leading to emittance growth of the accelerated beam, and synchrotron radiation due to focusing fields, which can give rise to excessive energy loss. One or both of these effects could also arise in other types of accelerator under consideration for high‐energy electron linear colliders.
