Mechanisms of ductile failure in compression are studied, based on a micro structural consideration. Analytical models are constructed and model experiments on cylinder specimen are performed. Geometrical softening is possible in shear if the material contains or nucleates voids. The original Gurson model is unable to analyze the shear deformation. Therefore, modified Gurson model is proposed to incorporate damage accumulation under shearing. Modified Gurson model is also applied to void closure of sintered material under compression loading. However, the ductile materials must consider both cases because void is nucleated in the material inside by compression and becomes closed at the specific angle. In this work, both of these cases are confirmed respectively and compared it with an experiment result. And it is confirmed that both cases is considered together.
