HI 21 cm absorption spectroscopy of damped Lyman‐α systems (DLAs) towards radio‐loud background sources provides an interesting probe of the nature of the absorbing galaxies, yielding information on their ISM conditions, kinematics and spatial extent. In this article, I will describe our recent results from such HI 21 cm absorption studies, before discussing prospects for the field with upcoming instruments like ASKAP and the EVLA.
