The increased interest in issues related to climate change, renewable energy, and sustainability has led to an associated increase in including these topics in science courses and in the development of courses in environmental science and sustainability. Driven by these trends, a course was developed to support a technical certificate in sustainability through an engineering technology program. The development of both the sustainability certificate and the sustainability course was supported by several faculty, the author included, obtaining a graduate certificate in sustainable engineering. One of the primary goals of the course that was ultimately developed was that it would also meet the requirements of the physical science elective for general education students and would be open to students from any major. This paper describes the course, as well as some of the challenges met, in its development and implementation.

A review of courses at other institutions found that many schools...
