The Statistical Research Center (SRC) at AIP has regularly conducted the Nationwide Survey of High School Physics in the US since the 1980s. We will be doing another round during the 2023–2024 academic year. In the fall, we will determine which schools are offering physics in the current year and who teaches the physics courses. In the spring, we will contact the teachers.

The School and Staffing Survey and the National Teacher and Principal Survey are conducted regularly by staff at the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, nces.ed.gov). Both provide data on teachers, including demographics and educational background. The teacher information is available in many different slices, including by primary teaching assignment. However, we know from our surveys that about 40% of the teachers teaching a high school physics classes have other classes as their primary teaching assignment.
