We describe an educational activity that can be completed with mobile media devices in order to understand the working principle of a pair of tuning forks, from the Historical Collection of Physics Instruments of the University of Palermo, and how they were used to explain acoustic interference and beats with the Lissajous optical method. This approach can be used with any tuning fork and it is a valuable teaching strategy that does not require specific laboratory equipment.

In 1854, the Academy of Sciences of Paris proposed to define the frequency of the note LA3 at 435 Hz, a value that was confirmed by the International Conference of Vienna on Nov. 17, 1885. On that occasion, the tuning fork was identified as the instrument that should have been the reference sample for tuning musical instruments. In 1953, the Technical Committee for the Acoustics of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) established a new reference frequency of the note LA3 of (440±0.5) Hz.

In the 19th century, acoustic frequencies were often recorded in simple vibrations (VS); 2 VS correspond to 1 Hz.
