Last month we looked at total enrollments in physics in U.S. high schools. These data come from our survey of high school physics. We reach out to a nationally representative sample of public and private high schools and the teachers who are teaching physics there. Our most recent survey was conducted during the 2018–19 academic year. We label the survey using the spring semester.

As noted, we ask about the types of physics classes the school is offering. AP Physics B was offered for the last time during the 2013 academic year; AP Physics 1 and 2 were first taught in the 2014 academic year. The figure below shows the proportion of total students enrolled by the various types of physics classes offered. The blue shades indicate students enrolled in Physics First and Conceptual Physics.
