Every four to six years, we do a survey of high school physics. We reach out to a nationally representative sample of public and private high schools and the teachers who are teaching physics there. Our most recent survey was conducted during the 2018-19 academic year. We label the survey using the spring semester.
We ask about the types of physics classes the school is offering. Our 2013 survey covers the last year AP Physics B was offered; AP Physics 1 and 2 were first taught in the 2014 academic year. The figure below shows the number of students enrolled in the various types of physics classes offered. The blue shades indicate the number of students enrolled in Physics First and Conceptual Physics. The orange shades indicate those enrolled in Regular Physics, with the lighter orange indicating students enrolled in classes taught using a conceptual text.
