Jack Hehn’s article on Phillips award winners in the November issue of TPT brought back many fond memories of working with all those remarkable mentors through the years. However, I need to respectfully point out a misidentification in one of his photographs. On p. 542, Janet Guernsey, not Guthrie, is with Melba and Sally. As a 1996 winner of a teaching award presented in her name by the New England Section, I feel a personal need to bring your attention to this error. Janet was an early and forceful source of support for women in science. A recent NSF survey found that a significant fraction of women holding PhDs in science in this country did their undergraduate work at Wellesley College, where Janet taught for many years. My granddaughter, a Wellesley alum now in a graduate program in chemical biology, was fortunate to benefit from the strength of a program...
