A recent TPT call for papers asks for “more research … about how to tear down and/or overcome the barriers to success that the world, and science, and academia, and the culture of physics put in the way of those who are not white and male.” Women make up only 20% of bachelor’s degree recipients in physics. Hispanic people comprise less than 8%, with Black people accounting for less than half that number. While the representation of Hispanic people appears to be increasing over the last 10 years, the same is not true for Black people, nor is it true for women.

There were only 24 women among faculty members who identify as Native American people, Hispanic people, and Black people, so we combined these to increase the statistical power of the test of intersectionality of race/ethnicity and gender. We recognize that this approach does not allow us to distinguish differences among women who are from different minoritized groups. Of the 24 women, three selected two of the minoritized race/ethnicities. Due to the small number of women from minoritized groups, qualitative methods may be a better way to study intersectionality.

While doing a postdoc and earning one’s highest degree in the U.S. were both statistically significant in one step, they were no longer statistically significant after adding the highest degree the department awards.
