This article describes an AP Physics-level lab practicum to determine the coefficient of kinetic friction between a wooden block and a surface in a modified Atwood’s machine setup. The students may not use a dynamics approach to complete the task, only energy concepts. The only equipment they are allowed to use is a meterstick and a digital balance.
