I enjoyed reading the article “Bringing a Superhero Down to Earth,”1 which begins with a very good paragraph. “I am always looking for ways to bring current events into my introductory physics classroom or laboratory.” I agree with those words, but I also like to ask my students: “What is the condition necessary to get into a vehicle in movement, without damage?” I use the problem of two men in flying suits trying to get into an airplane. Later I show them a very beautiful video2 showing how to do that. The answer is very simple—they need to have the same velocity as the airplane.

The answer given in the article asks the students a very different question and gives as an answer that the superhero needs a free fall from 1446 ft. Then the speed at ground level is 206 mph, about four times the 54 mph...
