About 15 years ago I had my nearsightedness corrected by LASIK surgery. Seconds before the operation, I asked the surgeon exactly what he planned to do to my eyes. Knowing that I teach physics, he told me quite succinctly, “I’m going to flatten your corneas.”
If you’re nearsighted and have lost your glasses and need to see clearly temporarily, you can fix your own vision. It’s simple. Just flatten your corneas. Close your eyelids partway and gently push against your corneas through your eyelids using your thumbs and index fingers. Your vision will improve dramatically. Or if pushing gently against your eyes makes you squeamish, there’s an alternative. Hold your index and middle fingers together and squeeze the tips of these fingers together with the tip of your thumb to leave a small hole through which light can pass.
