Like so many stars, these pinpricks of light are actually due to scattered light from individuals in a swarm of insects. Because the bugs are considerably longer than the wavelengths of visible sunlight, and because we are shielded from the Sun's direct rays, forward scattering dominates (as predicted by diffraction theory), resulting in this impressive star-like dawn vista.
