Who are your heroes and heroines? Do people even have such things anymore? Sometimes the idea of recognizing or celebrating heroism seems too risky to indulge in—those that we put up on a pedestal eventually get toppled, or trip themselves, or just wander off, these days more than ever. So, who needs heroes or sheroes?1
I do! And I think we all do.
A while back, during a quiet cool-down session after some scrimmaging, I remember asking my son's basketball team who their heroes were. They responded as you might expect, with a variety of sports stars mostly, and at first I was vaguely disappointed, perhaps because they were largely sports figures, or perhaps because the names weren't people that I necessarily would have said (or even had heard of!). But then I listened more closely to why they admired these individuals and I began to appreciate their point...
