What do you hope your students leave your class with? I tell my students that I want to turn them into nerds. I explain to them that I want them to start seeing physics everywhere. I know I reached my goal when they come bounding into the classroom excited to share what they saw at a concert or at the mall over the weekend.

How do you get students to see physics in the real world and not just in your classroom? Use the real world to teach. Take every opportunity to get them outside of your classroom. Even the Next Generation Science Standards seem to validate this idea. The NGSS states that students should see that “science models, laws, mechanisms, and theories explain natural phenomena.” if you want your students to appreciate that physics permeates their surroundings, you have to teach them to look for it.
