The case for dc versus ac power transmission is reviewed. It is concluded that for long transmission distances, i.e. more than 800 km (500 miles), dc transmission is cheaper and probably more reliable. The 1.0-MV Pacific Intertie is cited as an example of a modem efficient dc system.
