Recently I saw a video of the movie “Gold-Diggers of 1933.” While this movie (MGM/UA Home Video M301673) is perhaps best known for the Busby Berkeley number in which the dancers play violins outlined in neon tubes, the opening number has two knockout examples of transverse waves. In discussing the progression of the disturbance, remember that the various objects in the medium through which the wave passes perform the same motions, but with a constant phase difference between adjacent objects.
