We report on a novel method for determining refractive indices of thin layers of liquids or gases, based on the use of extended cavity diode lasers. Measurements for air, water, and vegetable oil show excellent agreement with accepted values. Applications in determining the refractive index of thin optical coatings and biological cells are discussed.

Note that while temperature changes also lead to expansion/contraction of the mechanical structure of the ECDL, these changes typically occur on much longer time scales, and can be completely neglected in our case.

We note that the effect of polarization by reflection can be strongly suppressed if the polarization of the laser diode and the orientation of the glass slide are chosen carefully to avoid polarization components that are parallel to the slide. While a change in polarization in the transmitted light does not affect the frequency of the laser, it does affect its frequency stability (mode hops, multi-mode emission).
