We discuss a pedagogical approach to the role of the Boltzmann probability in describing the temperature dependence of three simple experimental situations. The approach has been experimented in an introductory course on statistical mechanics for undergraduate engineering students at University of Palermo.

Ubbelhode viscometers give the kinematic viscosity, which is the viscosity to density ratio. Manufacturers usually provide values of the calibration constant to take into account the temperature effect on the sample density.

When using the EZ81 diode, we measure R directly by an ohmmeter. For the FP400, we calculate R by using the geometrical parameters of the filament, given by the manufacturer and the known value of the tungsten resistivity at 300 K, because in this case, the values of R are too low to be easily measured using the available ohmmeters.

37.
The main uncertainty arises from the need to visually determine the time at which the solution mixture starts turning pink. In this case, the distribution of τ values obtained at a given T critically depends on the experimenter’s judgment and accuracy. During our explorative trials with the chronometer, we typically obtained standard deviation values of about 2 s, compared with ≈0.3 s when using the spectrometer. The larger uncertainty of measurements performed with the chronometer does not prevent us from obtaining the linear trend in 1/τ versus 1/kT, but it causes an increased uncertainty in the activation energy estimates obtained from the slope of linear fits. Greater accuracy is required to obtain estimates of Ea that are within 10% of the accepted value.
