Oersted Medal—Presented To George F. Smoot III
The Hans Christian Oersted Medal recognizes those who have had an outstanding, widespread, and lasting impact on the teaching of physics.
George Fitzgerald Smoot III earned dual Bachelor’s Degrees in mathematics and physics in 1966 and a Ph.D. in physics in 1970, all at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He did postdoctoral research at MIT before moving to Berkeley in 1971. His interests had shifted from particle physics to cosmology. For many years Dr. Smoot has been a Professor of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and Research Physicist at both the UC Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He is a member of the team that will study Planck satellite data intended to test theories of the early universe and provide new clues to the origin of cosmic structure.
