Established in 1962, the Robert A. Millikan Medal recognizes those who have made outstanding scholarly contributions to physics education.
For over two decades, David Sokoloff has conducted research into students’ understanding of physics, used the results of this research to develop active learning approaches to enhance student understanding in large introductory physics courses, and actively disseminated those materials both nationally and internationally. Professor Sokoloff has been a leader in the movement to redesign lecture demonstrations based on research results so that they are effective learning experiences. He is also very active in promoting active learning and using computers to give students real time feedback of physical phenomena. He has co-authored the published curricular materials: RealTime Physics: Active Learning Laboratories and Interactive Lecture Demonstrations. Since 1999, he has been part of a UNESCO team presenting active learning workshops. Sokoloff is the editor of Active...
