A relatively simple experimental apparatus that uses an ac voltmeter to demonstrate the undefined nature of voltage when is described. This apparatus is suitable for a lecture demonstration in introductory physics courses. Voltmeter readings obtained in different experimental circumstances are also briefly discussed.
