The United States has participated in the International Physics Olympiad since 1986. In these years, the physics educational community has recognized that our very best high school students are certainly competitive with their counterparts throughout the world. The physics teachers and professors who have worked with these students have also realized that these students are capable of solving problems that are far beyond our traditional expectations. The successes of the U. S. Physics Team in the International Physics Olympiad will be described as well as the methods used in selecting and training the Team.
