As part of a wide‐ranging revision and modernization of the first‐year laboratory program a work package was put into effect based solely on introducing our students to the oscilloscope as a measuring instrument. The features of the instrumentation developed to allow the students to investigate the oscilloscope bandwidth and rise time are described and the correct use and value of the variable trigger level control, of external triggering, and the necessity of an oscilloscope probe are learned. The work package is designed to take 6 h to complete, spread over two afternoons.
