A brief discussion is presented of the operation of the traveling‐wave ring laser as a sensor of rotation. The description, based on the azimuthal probability function P(φ) associated with a linear combination of oppositely directed and conserved angular momenta Lz = ±mh/, is free of certain restrictions inherent in the conventional treatment, as well as providing a simple and transparent picture of the physical origin of gyroscopic action.(AIP)
