The formalism for understanding the quark model is developed purely within the framework of the first‐year quantum mechanics curriculum. It is shown that the mathematics presented in the preceding paper is sufficient for dealing with the essential features of the quark model, including the construction of the spin, unitary spin and spatial wave functions, and the combination of them. The totally symmetric three‐quark baryonic wave functions are discussed in detail. The two‐body mesonic states are also discussed. A brief review of the experimental efforts to identify the quark model multiplets is given.
