To ensure that every student entering a physics course can actually use the mathematics essential for the course, we have developed a math review unit in a mastery-learning format. To complete this unit, each student must demonstrate adequate mathematics skills by passing a test. This review unit has been used in both a lecture course and in “Keller plan” courses, and it has proved manageable with a class as large as 350 students.
