An alternative to the lecture format for teaching junior and senior level material is outlined. The basis of this alternative is the widely used Keller plan which features self-pacing, personal attention for each student, and emphasis on mastery of specific learning objectives. To meet needs particular to upperclass students and to create a learning atmosphere more appropriate for “pre-professionals,” we have added the following features: (1) student freedom in selecting his own procedure (textbook readings, exercises, etc.) for mastering the course material, and (2) some variety in topics studied by each individual student. Two successful trials of this adapted Keller plan in an atomic physics course at MIT are described, with emphasis on student performance and the administrative structure of the new format.
