This report outlines preliminary teaching experiences in the early working phases of a laboratory designed to permit students to re-perform crucial experiments in physics—using, insofar as possible, replicas of original apparatus and copies or translations of original texts. Teaching has so far been limited to nonphysics majors at Barnard and Columbia Colleges, but the laboratory is intended for physics majors as well. Early results are encouraging.
