During the fall of 1970, the Department of Physics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook debated the wisdom of establishing a Doctor of Arts degree to prepare teachers for the 2-yr colleges. Some faculty members questioned whether recipients of this degree would compete favorably in today's job market with conventionally trained PhD and MS recipients. A survey of the chairmen of physics departments in the publicly supported 2-yr colleges in New York was conducted to answer this question. The results of the survey are presented.
