On 7 May 1966, physics instructors from nearly 50 institutions, meeting in Seattle for the Third Northwest Conference on College Physics, voted to establish a regional association of physics faculties in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Formally designated the Pacific Northwest Association for College Physics, the resulting organization has worked steadily since then for the improvement of physics teaching and research in the area. The following article describes the status of college physics in the Northwest, briefly discusses the structure and role of the Association, and summarizes the programs it has sponsored or is planning.
