It is shown how the elementary properties of one-, two-, and three-dimensional free electron gases may be obtained as special cases of a general formulation. The exercise is suitable for a student and furthermore suggests that the concept of nonintegral dimensionality may serve to describe finite geometries as intermediate between the usual integral types.
